An enduring symbol of British royalty, Windsor Castle is one of the world’s oldest and largest inhabited castles. Its history is deeply intertwined with that of English and later British monarchs.
The castle speaks of its rich history and many historical events have taken place at Windsor Castle, including royal births, weddings, and coronations.
The origins of Windsor Castle trace back to the 11th century when William the Conqueror established a motte-and-bailey castle on the site. With successive monarchs, the castle was expanded and embellished into a magnificent royal residence. As part of Henry II’s construction work in the 12th century, the Round Tower was built. During the 14th century, Edward III converted the castle into a Gothic palace, enhancing its grandeur even further. It offers visitors breathtaking architecture, intricate tapestries, and priceless royal collections.
Windsor Castle became a safe haven for the royal family during World War II. To protect the young Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, they even slept in the castle’s dungeons for added security.
The Great Kitchen is the oldest working kitchen in the country, dating back to the 14th century. In order to ensure meals are served on time, the clocks are set five minutes fast.
Queen Elizabeth II is buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, which is part of St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is buried beside her.
