RECOMMENDED SIGHTS ON THIS TOUR …
Powerscourt Estate
Your first stop is the magnificent Powerscourt Estate, a captivating blend of history, art, and nature. The history of Powerscourt dates back to the 13th century when a medieval castle stood on the site. In the 18th century, the Wingfield family transformed it into a grand Palladian mansion, designed by Richard Cassels.
Gutted by a terrible fire in the 1970’s, the family vowed to rebuild and reopen the house to be enjoyed by all. The fire revealed a 13th century medieval keep that had been built into the heart of the building.
Explore the meticulously landscaped gardens, added to the house in the 19th century, they are renowned as some of the finest in the world. Known as ‘The Garden of the Gods’, wander through the terraced gardens, Italianate gardens, Japanese gardens, and the enchanting walled garden. Admire the stunning Powerscourt Waterfall, Ireland’s highest waterfall, cascading dramatically down a rocky hillside.
Glendalough
Next, journey to the ancient monastic site of Glendalough, nestled deep within the Wicklow Mountains. Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the valley, with its two tranquil lakes, towering mountains, and historic ruins. Your guide will share fascinating stories about the monastic settlement, including the iconic round tower, Celtic crosses, and the remains of St. Kevin’s Church. Take a leisurely stroll along the shores of the Upper Lake, soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings.
Wicklow Mountains National Park
Experience the raw beauty of the Wicklow Mountains National Park, Ireland’s largest national park. Drive through scenic valleys, encounter cascading waterfalls, and witness the dramatic peaks that have inspired poets and artists for centuries.
As you continue your journey through this area of outstanding natural beauty, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of rolling hills, lush valleys, and sparkling lakes. Your guide will point out filming locations from popular movies and TV shows, such as “P.S. I Love You” and “Vikings.”
Optional: Powerscourt Distillery
Visiting Powerscourt Distillery is a delightful experience for whiskey enthusiasts. The distillery is a relative newcomer to the Irish Whiskey scene, nestled within the historic Powerscourt Estate. The distillery offers guided tours that delve into the art of whiskey making. You’ll learn about the distillation process, sample a variety of whiskeys, and even get a chance to taste the water used in the production.
