The majestic medieval keep of Alloa Tower, located in Clackmannanshire, Scotland, stands as a testament to the nation’s rich history. Built in the 14th century to guard the River Forth, it has served as the ancestral residence of the Erskine family, Earls of Mar and Kellie, since then.
There have been many historical events that have taken place at Alloa Tower over the years. Mary, Queen of Scots, and her son, James VI, both spent time at the tower under the care of the Erskine family. 6th Earl of Mar John Erskine was a pivotal figure in the 1715 Jacobite Rising, leading a rebellious revolt against the Hanoverian monarchy.
Despite its medieval exterior, the tower’s interior is a fascinating blend of Georgian and medieval styles. The ancient dungeon, oak roof beams, and medieval groin vault give a glimpse of the building’s past. In addition to a grand staircase and elaborate plasterwork, the Erskine family’s lifestyle is reflected in the 18th-century additions.
There is an opportunity to explore its historic chambers, learn about the Erskine family’s legacy, and take in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside while visiting the castle.
