Armadale Castle on the Isle of Skye began as a mansion built around 1790 for the MacDonalds of Sleat, a branch of the mighty Clan Donald. By 1815, architect James Gillespie Graham transformed it into a grander structure in the Gothic Revival style. This extension boasted lavish interiors and a dramatic facade, but its defensive role was purely symbolic.

Disaster struck in 1855 when a fire ravaged the castle. Though rebuilt with a central wing added, it never regained its former glory the castle was abandoned in 1925 leaving the castle a picturesque ruin whilst The MacDonalds moved to a smaller house on the estate.

Today, visitors explore the atmospheric ruins, their imagination sparked by the ivy-clad stones. But the true star of the show are the surrounding gardens. Sprawling over 40 acres, they boast woodland trails, stunning views, and colorful blooms. The Clan Donald Centre, housed within the gardens, features the Museum of the Isles, a treasure trove of Highland history.

Though the castle itself is a shell, Armadale remains a captivating destination, offering a glimpse into clan life and the enduring beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
