The Bealach na Bà (gaelic for Pass of the Cattle) is a winding single track road that weaves its way through the mountains of the Applecross peninsula in the Wester Ross region. The road was historically used as a drovers’ road for driving cattle overland to market.

The Bealach na Bà is just one feature on this road, being its highest point and site of several corries. The historic mountain pass was built in 1822 and features very tight hairpin bends and switchbacks as the road climbs up the hillside with gradients that approach 20%.

The pass has been made famous through TV productions such as Hamish Macbeth and Top Gear and is part of the NC500 driving route.

It has the steepest ascent of any road in the UK, rising from sea level at Applecross at the western end of the route to 626 metres (2,054 ft) and is the third highest road in Scotland.

“The Bealach” as it is known locally is considered unsuitable for learner drivers, rented motorhomes / RVs and large vehicles.
