The Butt of Lewis is a place of extremes. The most northernly tip of the Isle of Lewis, this rocky outcrop is famous for its remote beauty and a Guinness World Record as the ‘windiest place’ in the UK.

The dominant feature is the famous Butt of Lewis Lighthouse – a 121ft high structure which is unusually made of red brick and left unpainted, making for a striking contrast to the natural palette around it.

The lighthouse is one of many Stevenson lighthouses which surround the British Isles. The most famous of the Stevensons might be Robert Louis Stevenson, the world-renowned author of Treasure Island among other notable works.

The Butt of Lewis has a historic connection to the legendary Flannan Isles, site of the infamous disappearance of three lighthouse keepers and an inspiration for the recent Hollywood film ‘The Lighthouse’ starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Defoe.

A gentle hike around the coves and the lighthouse itself makes for a memorable stop along Lewis’ dramatic coastline.
