One of Scotland’s most recognised monuments, the Commando monument is a large three-figure bronze statue standing 17 feet or 5.2 meters tall. It was unveiled in 1952 by the Queen Mother.

Following the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940, Winston Churchill ordered the commandos to be formed as a way to retaliate against German occupation. While World War II was being fought on the contienent, allied forces trained near Spean Bridge from their base at Achnacarry Castle.

They were an elite force that could conduct irregular warfare in a variety of environments. They served around the globe with distinction for more than 1,700 commandos. For valour in the presence of the enemy, eight commandos won the Victoria Cross, the most prestigious honour in the British honorary system. In memory of all commandos who serviced there is an inscription on the plinth: “United We Conquer.”

In remembrance of Armistice Sunday every year, a memorial service is held around the monument, at which veterans and their families, as well as locals and tourists from around the world in attendance.

With a stunning view over the Nevis Range and Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in the Uk, this memorial stands in one of the most spectacular locations in Scotland.
