One of Edinburgh’s many hidden enclaves, Dean Village is a ‘blink and you miss it’ haven of tranquility just beyond the new town. It’s a picturesque area of cottages and cobbled streets intertwined in stark contrast to the grand marching avenues and properties of the New Town above. The Tranquil Water of Leith runs through the valley which provided the power for the villages industrial past.

Situated over two weirs on the Water Of Leith river, Dean was a milling village. Mill buildings, stones and plaques (decorated with baked bread and pies) can still be found here. Well Court was built in the 1880s and housed local workers who worked at the water mills, now private residences.

The Dean Bridge can also be found if you walk along the walkway following the Water of Leith. Dean Bridge that runs over the river and the St Bernard’s Well (down stream) were both designed by famous British engineer Thomas Telford.

If time and weather permits you can walk along the riverside path all the way to The Shore in Leith (2.7 miles).
