This advancement finally ended the gruelling tradition of communal washing, where heavy laundry was cleaned in the loch using water heated over open fires on the shore.

Life changed again in 1965 when daily milk deliveries began, removing the ancient need for every family to keep a cow and grow crops to feed it. Now, thanks to restoration efforts that began in 1989, you can even stay in these historic homes. Several have been converted into unique accommodation, allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere of a 19th-century blackhouse while enjoying the modern luxuries that the original villagers could only have imagined.
