Also known as the Holy Isle due to its near 1400 years as a religious settlement. Many miracles are said to have occurred on the island over this period and it was once a prized destination for pilgrims from all over Europe. The remains of a 12th century priory now draw visitors from the world over.

The most famous inhabitant of the island was Saint Cuthbert who became the most prominent bishop in the great Kingdom of Northumberland. He spent a solitary life in this area but came renowned as a gifted prophet and healer. The consecration of his remains on the island led to the many accounts of miraculous events and immortalised Lindisfarne as the ‘Holy Isle’.

Unfortunately for the original monastery, Lindisfarne was one of the first to feel the wrath of the invading vikings of the 8th century. These raids have been dramatised through shows such as Vikings (HC/Amazon) and numerous historic novels.

The most famous artefact to come out of the priory is the medieval scripture known as the Lindisfarne Gospels. This priceless illuminated manuscript which dates from the early 700’s features beautifully illustrated gospels of the four Evangelists, Mark, John, Luke and Matthew. The original is stored at the British Library in London but a modern copy was gifted to the clergy of the island.

The Holy Isle is a must-see destination for any travellers on the north east coast of England and pairs well with trips to Alnwick Castle, Hadrian’s Wall and Bamburgh Castle. Bear in mind that visiting hours are dictated by the tide as the island is only accessible via a tidal causeway. Lindisfarne offers numerous amenities in which to spend your time including cafes, pubs, shops and visitor attractions to suit all ages. And, your guide will keep you on the right side of the tide!
