This somewhat out of place structure was built in 1897 by local banker and philanthropist John Stuart McCaig. His ambition was to provide work for local stonemasons during the quiet winter months to construct a lasting monument to the McCaig family.

McCaig was an admirer of Roman and Greek architecture and had planned for Oban to have its own  Colosseum. His grand plan included a museum and gallery with a central tower including statues of himself, his siblings and their parents.

His death in 1902 brought an end to construction with only the outer walls completed.

McCaig’s Tower offers spectacular views across Oban Bay to the Small Islands. The gardens inside the tower are well maintained and are a peaceful escape from the hubbub of central Oban beneath.
