At the heart of Neolithic Orkney is the Ring of Brodgar which is an impressive henge and stone circle that remained the centre of ritual and ceremonial activity after the Neolithic period. Sitting on the Ness of Brodgar it has a presence thanks to the size and space that surrounds it. 36 of the original 60 stones remain standing today, since approximately 2500 BC.

The ring of Brodgar forms Orkneys UNESCO world heritage site, alongside, Skara Brae, Maeshowe and the Standing Stones of Stenness.

It is believed that the stones mark significant astronomical alignments while there are also possibilities that they relate to the solstices and the equinoxes in addition to dates such as Beltane.

The dark skies of Orkney make this an ideal spot even today for star gazing and possible aurora borealis while stepping in the footsteps of our Neolithic ancestors.
