Scott’s View is probably the most famous view in the Borders. It was loved by Sir Walter Scott who lived nearby at Abbotsford House.
The story goes that when his funeral cortege was making its way to Dryburgh, the horses stopped, unbidden, at the spot. Some say they were paying homage to the late author in the herse they were pulling, some that they were simply used to stopping there during Scott’s visits. The westerly view takes in the Eildon Hills and the River Tweed meandering through the valley floor.
A flat piece of land on the valley floor and visible from the viewpoint was once the site of the old Melrose Abbey, although nothing of the original building remains today.
