Home / Scotland / Destinations / Standing Stones of Stenness
This is the oldest of the ceremonial monuments on Orkney dating back 5000 years ago. Making it likely to be the oldest in the British Isles. Originally there were 12 monoliths standing up to 6 metres high, however only 4 remain today set within a rock cut ditch and outer bank where the bones of cattle, sheep and dog as well as human fingers were found.
Located within a short walking distance of Barnhouse village which sits on the shores of Loch Harray. It is thought that the people of the village housed the stonemason and workers that created the henge.
In the centre of the henge the focus is that of a hearth which is situated on top of a previous one, suggesting ceremonial use.
You can visualise that when you visit today with a burning fire in the centre illuminating the stone circle while people gather to mark their relationships with the living, the past and the natural world.
