For those looking to experience the best of Scotland’s scenery, history and whisky in an easy day trip from Edinburgh, this suggested tour itinerary fits the bill. Venture through rugged scenery with highland peaks and stunning lochs, see over 3000 years of history and stop at Glenturret Distillery to learn how we make whisky

This tour is ‘off the beaten track’ and includes roads that are simply not passable by tour buses.

Each one of our private tours is conducted in our premium Mercedes minivans, ensuring your comfort as we venture along the small cobbled streets around Edinburgh and narrow back roads of the highlands.

Your knowledgable kilt-wearing private tour guide will tell you the stories and show you the sights on this tour. We offer flexibility and your time inside and outside the vehicle is up to you.

RECOMMENDED SIGHTS ON THIS TOUR …
Doune Castle

Doune Castle is built around a central courtyard, built on a picturesque site overlooking the River Teith. Its gatehouse is almost 100 feet high, and the Lord’s Hall has been restored with timber panelling and a minstrels’ gallery above the entrance. The house features extensive living quarters, a great hall and a large kitchen. Doune has a great history been used on TV and film projects such as Game of Thrones, Outlander, and Monty Python.

Balquhidder

Our next stop is Balquhidder, where we visit the grave of rogue turned hero Rob Roy MacGregor. We take the north shore road through Killin, Glenogle, and info The Loch Lomond and Trossachs national park.

A herdsman, Rob Roy was betrayed by one of his staff who took the money he entrusted to him. As a result, land was seized, which caused a bloody feud and eventually led to his father, the Clan Chief and his mother dying from illnesses. During the Jacobite uprisings in the 1700’s, the clan had already come under increasing oppression from British military forces and Rob had been imprisoned before being pardoned. Sir Walter Scot made Roy Roy’s story into a novel, which was adapted into the film of the same name starring Liam Neeson in 1995.

Kenmore

The picturesque village of Kenmore is located at the mouth of the River Tay, with whitewashed cottages boasting panoramic views of Loch Tay, as well as a long beach where you can relax before lunch at a loch-side Scottish bistro.

Highland drive

After lunch, we take the ‘high road’ venturing through The Sma’ Glen, Glenalmond and Glen Quaich. We’ll drive through some impressive scenery along wee roads, with a photo stop to take in the highland air.

Glenturret Distillery

Located in a picturesque glen near Crieff, The Glenturret distillery is one of Scotland’s oldest continuously producing distilleries. Learn the process of creating ‘the water of life’ by taking this hosted tour, where you will be able to explore the ingredients, watch the process in action, and sample a few of your favorite drams.

South Queensferry & Forth Bridges

Taking  the ‘scenic route’ back towards Edinburgh, we come to the River Forth at Queensferry. Here lies a cantilever designed railway bridge across the Forth that was opened in 1890. An engineering marvel of the modern world, the bridge is a UNESCO world heritage site. Located adjacent to the rail bridge is the 1964 road bridge, now replaced by the 2017 Queensferry Crossing.

We had a wonderful day trip with our tour guide, Sean. He was very knowledgeable and personable! The private tour in a luxury van...with drop off and pick up at our hotel...was well worth the price. We were able to see and do so much! A great highlight of our trip to Scotland. Thank you, Sean!
