Our service
Explore this most loved trio of Whisky Distilleries on the path less trodden from Edinburgh. Discover how whisky came to be created by 15th century monks and learn the complex process that makes whisky our most famous product. One of our most famous (and most exported) products, the ‘water of life’ is synonymous with Scotland.
This tour takes us to three of my most loved distilleries; Lindores Abbey, Dewars Aberfeldy and Glenturret. They hold the accolades of original distillery, longest continually producing distillery and most southerly Highland distillery in Scotland and are close to my heart.
This tour is a pilgrimage to my all-time favourite distilleries within reach of Edinburgh. These three remarkable producers are steeped in history and produce specialist lowland and highland drams including distillery exclusive special releases.
Each one of our private tours is conducted in our premium Mercedes minivans, ensuring your comfort as we venture along the small cobbled streets around Edinburgh and narrow back roads of the highlands.
Your knowledgable kilt-wearing private tour guide will tell you the stories and show you the sights on this tour. We offer flexibility and your time inside and outside the vehicle is up to you.
RECOMMENDED SIGHTS ON THIS TOUR …
The original distillery
Described as ‘The spiritual home of whisky’ Lindores Abbey Distillery‘s excise license dates from 1494. Having learned about distillation from the modern middle east, King James IV commissioned the monks of Lindores Abbey to turn 8 bolls of malt into ‘usquebaugh’ (or ‘the water of life’. After a hiatus of 523 years, Lindores is again the site for Whisky distillation and a visit to this historic location is an essential stop on any Scotch whisky journey. Learn about the production and taste the output overlooking the old Abbey ruins.
The longest producing distillery
Established in 1775, The Glenturret Distillery is a postcard worthy white-wash distillery in the rolling Perthshire hills. It holds the title of being the longest producing distillery in Scotland, steeped in tradition. Glenturret has a distinctive fruity flavour because of water sourced from Loch Turret and a hand-operated wooden rouser mash.
The most southerly Highland Distillery
The history of Dewar’s distillery began in 1846 with John Dewar Sr., who opened a wine and spirits shop in Perth, Scotland. Dewar’s White Label was created in 1899 by John Dewar & Son’s first Master Blender, A.J. Cameron.
Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery is the only Scotch whisky distillery built by the Dewar family. It was first planned in 1896 by the sons of John Dewar and was built in the heart of Highland Perthshire. Today, Dewar’s is one of the world’s best-selling blended Scotch whiskies. It is enjoyed in over 180 countries around the world.
Along the way
You’ll pass historic places and landscapes that your guide will introduce and tell you more about along the road.
Lunch
We recommend enjoying the fantastic charcuterie board at Lindores after the tour and tasting.
