RECOMMENDED SIGHTS ON THIS TOUR …
Doune Castle
This 14th-century fortress boasts a striking 100-foot-tall gatehouse and one of the best-preserved great halls in the country. Its impressive architecture has made it a popular filming location, captivating audiences worldwide.
Perhaps most famously, Doune Castle served as the primary location for the iconic Monty Python and the Holy Grail, depicting various fictional castles in the comedic retelling of the Arthurian legend. More recently, it has enchanted viewers as Castle Leoch in the hit television series Outlander, the seat of Clan MacKenzie in the 18th century.
Beyond its cinematic fame, Doune Castle offers a glimpse into Scotland’s rich history. Visitors can explore its grand halls, climb the imposing gatehouse, and imagine life within its medieval walls.
Glenturret Distillery
Located in a picturesque glen near Crieff, The Glenturret distillery is one of Scotland’s oldest continuously producing distilleries. Learn the process of creating ‘the water of life’ by taking this hosted tour, where you will be able to explore the ingredients, watch the process in action, and sample a few of your favourite drams.
Balquhidder
Our next stop is Balquhidder, where we visit the grave of local rogue turned hero Rob Roy MacGregor. We take the north shore road through Killin, Glenogle, and into The Loch Lomond and Trossachs national park.
A herdsman, Rob Roy was betrayed by one of his staff who took the money he entrusted to him. As a result, land was seized, which caused a bloody feud and eventually led to his father, the Clan Chief and his mother dying from illnesses related to the fallout.
During the Jacobite uprisings in the 1700’s, the clan had come under increasing oppression from British military forces and Rob had been imprisoned for sheep rustling in London, but was pardoned shortly before extradition to Barbados. Sir Walter Scot made Roy Roy’s story into a novel, which was adapted into the film of the same name starring Liam Neeson in 1995.
Falls of Falloch
The waterfall at Falloch is a picturesque 30-foot cascade down the River Falloch near Crianlarich. Its thundering waters create a mesmerising spectacle, especially after heavy rainfall. Legend has it that the pool at the base of the falls, known as “Rob Roy’s Bathtub,” was once used by the infamous Scottish outlaw, Rob Roy MacGregor, as a hiding place.
Loch Lomond
The drive down Loch Lomond side is a feast for the senses. Winding along the western shore, the road hugs the sparkling waters, offering breathtaking views of the loch and its surrounding mountains.
The towering peaks of Ben Lomond and the Arrochar Alps provide a dramatic backdrop. Lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and hidden glens add to the allure. We stop at picturesque Luss village to take in the panoramic views .
