RECOMMENDED SIGHTS ON THIS TOUR …
Clynelish
Clynelish is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in Brora in Sutherland. The distillery was founded in 1819 and is one of the Four Corners distilleries of Johnnie Walker. As such is known as ’the highland home of Johnnie Walker’ but it also has its own single malts that are available in various ages, the most popular being 14 years old. Clynelish is known for its waxy, fruity, and slightly smoky whisky.
The distillery has a long and rich history, and has been through many changes over the years, having recently been completely renovated. One thing that has remained constant is the distillery’s commitment to producing high-quality whisky.
It’s remote location means it is off the tourist trail, however we believe it is a hidden gem in the Scotch Whisky world.
Glenmorangie
On the banks of the Dornoch Firth lies Glenmorangie Distillery, arguably Scotland’s best selling malt producer, making some 10 million bottles per year. Glenmorangie dates back to the 18th century when a brewery was built on the site of the Morangie farm. In 1843 that the distillery was established by David Sutherland, the renovation was done on a shoestring budget and two second hand gin stills were purchased.
The distillery was sold to Leith-based blender MacDonald and Muir in 1918 and the family retained ownership of the company until 2004 when it was sold to the French drinks and fashion conglomerate Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton for £300 million. The ‘Glenmorangie’ name is pure Victorian marketing; meaning ‘The Glen of Tranquility” in Scots Gaelic, although the distillery doesn’t actually sit in a glen (valley)!
Dalmore
Dalmore is known for its production of luxury whiskies, which are often matured in a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, and ex-port casks. This gives Dalmore whiskies a complex flavor profile with notes of vanilla, fruit, and spice.
located in Alness, on the banks of The Cromarty Firth, the distillery was founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson and is currently owned by Whyte & Mackay.
Some of the most popular Dalmore whiskies include the Dalmore 12 Year Old, the Dalmore 15 Year Old, and the Dalmore 18 Year Old. The Dalmore also produces a number of limited edition whiskies, which are often highly sought-after by collectors.
Carnegie Whisky Cellar
Situated in old Carnegie Courthouse, this is a real treat for Scotch whisky fans. The award-winning Carneige Whisky Cellar in Dornoch offers a fascinating and unique insight into the regions’ best drams during their tutored whisky flight.
On this tour we typically experience a full production tour at our first distillery and then enjoy whisky tasting ‘flights’ at two other locations of your choosing. There is also time for lunch along the way.
