Day 1 — Edinburgh to Inverness: The Highland Gateway

We journey north into the Highlands, walking beneath ancient forest at The Hermitage and enjoying a private whisky tasting at Dalwhinnie. Lunch in the Cairngorms precedes powerful moments at Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns. By evening, we arrive in Inverness, immersed in history and Highland atmosphere.

The Hermitage

Our journey north begins beneath towering Douglas firs in this enchanting Highland woodland. A gentle riverside walk leads to Ossian’s Hall, an 18th-century folly dramatically poised above the thundering Black Linn Falls. The air is cool, scented with pine and moss, while the River Braan surges below in a display of natural theatre. It is a stirring introduction to Scotland — where landscape, poetry, and romance intertwine — and the first true sense that we are entering the Highlands.

Dalwhinnie Distillery

Set high in the Cairngorm Mountains, Dalwhinnie stands proudly as Scotland’s highest distillery. Here, in this remote yet welcoming setting, we enjoy a private “Whisky and Chocolate” pairing designed to reveal the delicate honeyed notes of this Highland single malt. As copper stills gleam and peat-tinged aromas linger, your guide shares stories of water sources, mountain climate, and centuries-old craftsmanship. It’s a warming, sensory experience that deepens both appreciation and connection to place.

Aviemore – Cairngorms National Park

Surrounded by vast mountain plateaus and ancient Caledonian pine forest, Aviemore provides a relaxed Highland lunch stop in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. Whether dining in a cosy café or traditional inn, the atmosphere is distinctly alpine in character. Red squirrels dart through nearby forest, heather stretches across open moorland, and distant peaks frame the horizon. This pause offers both nourishment and perspective before we continue north toward the drama and history of Culloden.

Culloden Battlefield & Clava Cairns

On the windswept moor of Culloden, we stand where the Jacobite Rising ended in 1746. Clan markers etched with familiar names lie scattered across the battlefield, each representing lives lost in a conflict that reshaped Highland culture forever. A short drive away, Clava Cairns transports us back four millennia to Bronze Age burial chambers and standing stones aligned with the winter solstice. Together, these sites weave a powerful narrative of Scotland’s ancient and more recent past.

Day 2 — The Rugged West & Assynt Wilderness

Today reveals the wild northwest — dramatic gorges, whitewashed fishing villages, and the striking peaks of Assynt. We explore ruined castles, hidden waterfalls, and ancient geology before crossing the sweeping Kylesku Bridge. Remote, spacious, and elemental, this is the Highlands at their most untamed.

Corrieshalloch Gorge

A dramatic cleft in the Highland landscape, this 200-foot-deep Victorian gorge is crossed by a swaying suspension bridge. Below, the Falls of Measach plunge through a narrow box canyon carved by Ice Age torrents. It’s a thrilling perspective — both geological wonder and feat of 19th-century engineering.

Ullapool

Clustered white cottages line the shores of Loch Broom in this charming fishing village. Ullapool offers a relaxed harbour lunch stop, renowned for its exceptional local seafood. Fishing boats bob in the bay while mountains rise behind — a quintessential west coast Highland scene.

Knockan Crag

At Knockan Crag, we stand upon globally significant geology. The “Moine Thrust” revealed here reshaped scientific understanding of mountain formation. Interpretive trails guide us through rugged Assynt scenery, where ancient rock layers tell a story hundreds of millions of years in the making.

Ardvreck Castle & Calda House

On the lonely shores of Loch Assynt lie the romantic ruins of Ardvreck Castle and neighbouring Calda House. Wind-swept and atmospheric, these 15th-century remains evoke clan rivalries and Highland intrigue. Reflected in still waters beneath dramatic peaks, they form one of Scotland’s most photogenic scenes.

Wailing Widow Falls

A hidden treasure of the northwest, this 100-foot waterfall plunges from a hanging valley directly toward the sea. Reached by a quiet track, Wailing Widow Falls offers solitude and raw natural power — the kind of secret stop only those who truly know the Highlands can share.

Kylesku Bridge

Sweeping gracefully across Loch a’ Chàirn Bhàin, this award-winning curved bridge is a triumph of modern design in a timeless landscape. As we cross, panoramic views unfold in every direction — sea loch, rugged hills, and vast northern sky.

Day 3 — The North Coast

Sweeping coastal roads guide us along vast sea lochs and Atlantic cliffs. At Durness, dramatic limestone caves showcase nature’s artistry. We end the day at the most northerly point on the Uk Mainland.

Smoo Cave

Near the village of Durness lies Smoo Cave — a vast limestone sea cavern carved by both ocean and freshwater. Inside, a waterfall crashes dramatically into shadowed depths. This fusion of sea cave and river cave creates one of Britain’s most impressive natural formations.

​The North Coast Drive

This is the highlight of the day, winding along the edges of Loch Eriboll (the deepest sea loch in the UK) and cross the Kyle of Tongue on a scenic causeway with views of the ruined Castle Varrich and the peaks of Ben Hope and Ben Loyal.

Maritime history and clan heritage shape the journey south, culminating at the fairytale Dunrobin Castle. Rugged seascapes and elegant architecture combine in a day rich with contrast.

Castle of Mey

Lovingly restored by the Queen Mother, the Castle of Mey sits peacefully overlooking the Pentland Firth. Its elegant interiors and immaculate walled gardens offer a refined contrast to the wild northern coastline. A deeply personal royal retreat, it remains one of the Highlands’ most charming estates.

Duncansby Stacks

A short coastal walk from the lighthouse reveals towering sea stacks rising sharply from crashing Atlantic swells. Shaped by relentless erosion, these jagged formations are among Scotland’s most dramatic coastal features — wild, windswept, unforgettable.

Castle Sinclair Girnigoe

Dunrobin Castle

Resembling a Loire Valley château, Dunrobin enchants with turrets, manicured French-style gardens, and sweeping sea views. Time your visit for the falconry display — a graceful spectacle set against castle towers and open sky.

Day 5 — Lochs, Legends & Glencoe

We follow the shores of Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle before pausing at Fort Augustus along the Caledonian Canal. The journey south crescendos in Glencoe’s towering peaks and the iconic Three Sisters — a dramatic finale to our Highland adventure.

Urquhart Castle & Loch Ness

Overlooking the dark waters of Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle offers sweeping views and centuries of Highland conflict. Wander the ruins, climb the Grant Tower, and perhaps scan the surface for a legendary silhouette beneath the water.

Fort Augustus

At the southern tip of Loch Ness, Fort Augustus sits along the Caledonian Canal. Here we pause to watch canal boats gently rise and fall through the lock system — an elegant piece of 19th-century engineering amid tranquil Highland surroundings.

Glencoe

Driving through the “Glen of Weeping,” we are surrounded by towering peaks and brooding beauty. At the Three Sisters viewpoint, dramatic ridgelines carve against the sky — one of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes and a fitting finale to our northern adventure.
