Ardnamurchan Distillery
Tucked away on the rugged Ardnamurchan (pronounced ard-na-murkan) Peninsula — one of the most remote corners of the Scottish Highlands — Ardnamurchan Distillery is a modern marvel with an old soul.
Opened in 2014 by Adelphi, the respected independent bottler, the distillery combines cutting-edge sustainability with traditional whisky craftsmanship. It produces around 400,000 litres of pure alcohol per year, drawn from locally sourced barley and powered entirely by renewable energy — hydroelectric power from the nearby river and biomass heat from local forestry. Every drop of water used in production flows from the cool, peaty springs of Glenmore, giving Ardnamurchan its distinctive maritime-smoky character.
A tour of Ardnamurchan is as much an adventure as an education. The winding single-track road to Glenbeg sets the tone — wild landscapes, red deer, and sweeping sea views — before you arrive at the handsome stone distillery. Inside, visitors are guided through the mashing, fermentation, and copper still rooms, learning how the distillery tracks every bottle via blockchain for full transparency — a world first in Scotch whisky.
Tastings are generous, and designated drivers are handed a “driver’s dram” to enjoy later. The experience ends in the shop, where limited editions often sell out fast — a fitting finale to one of Scotland’s most remote and forward-thinking distilleries.
