Auchentoshan Distillery
Auchentoshan Distillery is a single malt whisky distillery located in in the Clydebank area of Glasgow. Founded in 1823 by John Bulloch, a corn merchant, the name Auchentoshan comes from the Gaelic Achadh an Oisein, meaning “corner of the field.” The distillery was originally known as Clydebank Distillery, but it was renamed Auchentoshan in 1837.
Auchentoshan Distillery has a long and rich history. In 1877, the distillery was acquired by the Glasgow distillers John & George MacLachlan. The MacLachlans were responsible for much of the distillery’s early success, and they helped to establish Auchentoshan as one of the leading single malt whisky brands in Scotland.
During the Second World War, the Auchentoshan Distillery was heavily damaged by German bombing. It was rebuilt after the war, and it resumed production in 1947.
Today, Auchentoshan Distillery is owned by Beam Suntory, one of the world’s leading spirits companies. The distillery produces a wide range of single malt whiskies, including the Auchentoshan Three Wood, the Auchentoshan Heartwood, and the Auchentoshan 12 Year Old.
Auchentoshan whisky is then matured in a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon casks, ex-sherry casks, and ex-wine casks. The type of cask used has a significant impact on the flavor of the whisky.
Auchentoshan whisky is known for its smooth and delicate flavor. It typically has notes of vanilla, honey, and fruit, such as apples and pears. Auchentoshan whisky can also have notes of spice and oak, depending on the type of cask used for maturation.
Auchentoshan Distillery offers a variety of tours that tours give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the whisky-making process and an opportunity to taste some of Auchentoshan’s finest whiskies.
