Ballindalloch Distillery
Nestled within the picturesque Speyside region on the historic Ballindalloch Estate, this distillery marks a significant return to whisky making for the Macpherson-Grant family. While the family castle has stood nearby since 1546, the distillery itself is a modern addition, commencing production in 2014 within a converted 19th-century farm steading.
Ballindalloch proudly claims the title of Scotland’s first single estate distillery. They uniquely utilise barley grown on their own fields, with the by-products even feeding their Aberdeen Angus cattle. This “hands-on” approach extends throughout their small-scale operation, preferencing traditional methods overseen by experienced distillers.
Quirks include their external malt storage bins and the varied fermentation times in their wooden washbacks. Their stills, a lamp glass shaped wash still and a ball-shaped spirit still, contribute to a robust and fruity new make spirit. Even their spirit safe is a piece of local history, a gift from the neighbuoring Cragganmore distillery, highlighting the family’s long-standing connection to Speyside whisky.
