Bladnoch Distillery
Bladnoch Distillery, nestled in the picturesque Galloway, south West Scotland, holds the distinction of being the most southerly active distillery in the country. Its history stretches back to 1817 when the McClelland brothers obtained a license to distill on their Bladnoch farm. This marked the beginning of a long and fascinating journey for this Lowland distillery.
For nearly a century, the McClelland family nurtured and expanded the distillery. At its peak, Bladnoch boasted six washbacks and an annual output of approximately 230,000 liters of alcohol, earning it the esteemed title of “Queen of the Lowlands.” However, like many distilleries, Bladnoch faced periods of closure and changing ownership throughout the 20th century.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Bladnoch’s history is its connection (and relative proximity) to Northern Ireland. Belfast distiller Dunville & Co. acquired the distillery in 1911, a significant event that shaped its future.
The distillery’s fortunes took a turn for the better in 2015 when Australian entrepreneur David Prior acquired Bladnoch. Under his ownership, the distillery underwent an extensive refurbishment, breathing new life into its facilities and production processes. This revitalisation has allowed Bladnoch to reclaim its place among the esteemed ranks of Scottish distilleries.
Bladnoch produces a range of exceptional single malt whiskies, reflecting the unique Lowland character. Its spirit is often described as light, grassy, and malty, with subtle fruity and floral notes. The distillery’s commitment to quality and innovation ensures that each dram carries the essence of its rich history and the spirit of the Galloway region.
