Blair Athol Distillery
Blair Athol Distillery is one of the oldest whisky distilleries in Scotland. It is located in the picturesque town of Pitlochry, Perthshire, at the gateway to the Highlands. Founded in 1798 and originally named ‘Aldour’ the distillery was named after the Allt Dour burn the distillery draws it water from. In 1825 the distillery was re-launched, having changed ownership to John Robertson and has been producing whisky continuously ever since.
Blair Athol Distillery is known for its production of high-quality single malt whisky. The distillery’s whisky is characterised by its mellow flavor and smooth finish. Blair Athol whisky is used in a number of popular blended whiskies, including Bell’s, Johnnie Walker and Black & White.
The distillery sources its water from the Allt Dour burn, which flows through the grounds of the distillery. The water is said to be one of the factors that contributes to the unique flavour of Blair Athol whisky.
The distillery uses a traditional method of whisky production. The barley is malted in-house and then fermented in wood and stainless steel washbacks. The wash is then distilled in four copper pot stills. The spirit is then matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.
Blair Athol Distillery offers a variety of tours and tastings, including a standard tour, a cask strength tour, and a blending experience. The distillery also has a shop where visitors can purchase bottles of Blair Athol whisky, as well as other Scottish souvenirs.
