The Singleton (Glen Ord) Distillery

The Glen Ord Distillery is the only remaining single malt scotch whisky distillery on the Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands. Diageo owns the distillery that was founded in 1838.

Originally, the distillery was called the Ord Distillery Company. Founded in 1838 by Robert Johnstone and Donald MacLennan, it employed 18 people before going bankrupt in 1847. They continued to operate illegally for a few years before getting another license in 1855 under new owners, Alexander McLennan and Thomas McGregor.

In 1896, the distillery was sold to James Watson & Son, Dundee whisky blenders, who bought it for £15,800. The company had previously acquired three other distilleries as they were primarily invested in selling blended high quality whiskies, particularly Watson’s No. 10.

With the onset of World War I in 1917, the distillery was closed, along with a number of other similar businesses by the government in order to preserve barley for food supplies. As soon as the war ended, the distillery reopened and four years later, the Watsons sold the company to Thomas Dewars & Sons, who merged with the Distillers Company. Scottish Malt Distillers, a subsidiary of Distillers Company, bought the distillery back in 1930.

World War II caused the distillery to close again in 1939 and it took until 1946 for them to open again.

The Singleton Distillery produces a variety of whiskies, including the 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old, and 18 Year Old The Singleton of Glen Ord. A smooth and balanced flavor makes these whiskies stand out.

Tours, tastings, and masterclasses are offered at the distillery. It’s also a great place to learn about the history of the distillery and the making of whisky.
