Glengyle Distillery is Campbeltown’s modern revival story: a historic Mitchell-family site brought back to life to help keep the region’s whisky identity thriving. After the buildings were restored and a “best-of” set of equipment installed, distilling restarted in 2004, and the spirit has been released as Kilkerran single malt.

From a visitor’s point of view, Glengyle is fascinating because it’s small, hands-on, and tightly linked to Campbeltown’s traditional, craft-led style. Unlike some of the bigger names that offer a polished distillery experience, this is an authentic grass-roots production facility.

Malt is delivered from sister distillery Springbank, mashed in a semi-lauter tun, then fermented in large wooden washbacks before double distillation in a wash still and spirit still originally sourced from the (now closed) Ben Wyvis distillery. The result is a characterful Campbeltown malt that balances coastal oils and gentle smoke with a bright, citrusy edge—an excellent stop if you’re exploring the town’s trio of working distilleries and its whisky heritage.
