Jura Distillery
Jura distillery was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell, and has been in operation ever since, except for a brief period during World War II. It is located on the north coast of the island of Jura, overlooking the Paps of Jura mountains.
Jura Distillery is one of the most remote distilleries in Scotland, and is only accessible by taking two ferries, via the island of Islay. This isolation in the Inner Hebrides islands has helped to create the unique character of Jura whisky, which is known for its smooth, smoky flavor.
The distillery uses water from the Jura River, which is said to be one of the purest water sources in Scotland. The whisky is aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, which gives it a complex flavor profile.
In the late 1940s George Orwell stayed at Barnhill, a white-washed house on Jura where he wrote his final work – 1984. , He described the remote location as “in an extremely un-getatable place”, somewhere he could be completely isolated to write his now infamous masterpiece.
Jura whisky is popular with both beginners and experienced whisky drinkers alike. It is known for its versatility, and can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails.
