The Port of Leith Distillery is a contemporary whisky distillery in Leith, to the north of Edinburgh and part of the city scape, that has quickly become one of the city’s most talked-about spirits landmarks. Opened to visitors in October 2023, it represents a bold, modern approach to Scotch whisky production while drawing on Leith’s deep historical links with the whisky trade.

Designed as the UK’s first vertical whisky distillery, the facility rises nine storeys, with each stage of production — from milling and mashing at the top to fermentation and distillation below — arranged vertically to make efficient use of its compact urban site.

Founded by Edinburgh natives Paddy Fletcher and Ian Stirling, the distillery embodies a philosophy of meticulous craftsmanship and innovation. Importantly, all of the ingredients are sourced within direct line of sight, with barley from East Lothian and water originating in the Pentland Hills. The distillery invests in research to refine fermentation and spirit character.

While Edinburgh has other operational distilleries such as Holyrood producing whisky today, Port of Leith stands out for its architectural ambition and immersive visitor experience rather than as the sole pioneer of whisky revival in the city.

Beyond production, the distillery features guided tours, tastings and a top-floor bar with panoramic views of the Firth of Forth and the city skyline, making it a destination for both whisky lovers and visitors alike.
