Founded in 1798, Tobermory Distillery is one of Scotland’s oldest working distilleries and the only one on the Isle of Mull, perched directly on the harbour in the brightly painted town of Tobermory. After a history marked by long closures and restarts, the distillery has found modern stability under Tobermory Distillery Company Ltd.

That turbulent history has shaped a distillery that today places clear emphasis on character, tradition, and sense of place rather than scale.

Tobermory’s modern identity rests on versatility. From the same still house and raw materials, it produces two markedly different single malts: one unpeated and bright, the other smoky and assertive. This dual personality gives the distillery a rare breadth, allowing it to appeal to both classic Highland drinkers and peat lovers, while retaining a shared underlying spirit character.

Production remains deliberately traditional, with long fermentations and careful distillation helping to build a fruity, textured new make that responds well to varied maturation. Limited space on Mull means ageing largely takes place on the mainland, where cask management focuses on balance rather than dominance. Much like Glengyle, Tobermory is best understood not through numbers alone, but through its resilient history and the clarity of style that defines its whiskies.
